When Mesquite was finally successfully settled in 1894 by William E. and Abiel Abbot, Charles and Heber Hardy, Conrad Neagle, Jesse Waite, Abraham Woodbury and a few others, they changed the name from the Mesquite Flats to Mesquite. By the 1900's, the area had begun to change. The settlers had adapted to the cowboy lifestyle; cars started arriving in the valley and roads were being built. Little cafes and motels began replacing the subsistence farming that was prominent in the early days. [read more]
